"Flyers Whose Exploits Brought Prestige to Naval Aviation"


Halftone photo spread from Our Navy at War by Josephus Daniels, Secretary of the Navy during World War I. It features a portrait photograph of Lieutenant David S. Ingalls, the U.S. Navy's first aerial "ace" (right), and a view of Lieutenant George H. Ludlow seated in an Italian-built Macchi M.5 flying boat (left). Inset is a photograph of Ensign Charles H. Hammann, who was awarded the Medal of Honor for rescuing Ludlow on 21 August 1918.
