Civil War era officer, in a uniform similar to that of a U.S. Navy Master, pattern of 1852-62, but with shoulder straps that look like the pattern of 1862-63 and a cap device with one anchor and a shield.
The identification of this photograph, though of long-standing, is very questionable. Though Flusser served in the rank of Master in 1855, the style of the image and details of the uniform do not support that date. It is more probable that this is a photograph of an officer of the Revenue Cutter Service.
