Photo #: S-511-10 "Proposed Aircraft Carrier - Scheme CV 9-E" Preliminary design plan prepared for the General Board as part of the process leading to the Essex class (CV-9) aircraft carrier design. This plan, dated 4 January 1940, is for a ship of 25,000 tons standard displacement and a waterline length ("length between perpendiculars") of 820'. It is very similar to the "Scheme CV 9-E" drawing of 6 December 1939 (Photo # S-511-8), but with a slightly reshaped flight deck and the after elevator moved forward. Scale of the original drawings is 1/32" = 1'. The original plan is in the 1939-1944 "Spring Styles Book" held by the Naval Historical Center. U.S. Naval Historical Center Photograph.
