Henry Brutsche was born in 1846 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy from that state and served as a Landsman in the gunboat Tacony during the United States Civil War. On 31 October 1864, while under fire from the enemy during the taking Plymouth, North Carolina, Brutsche displayed coolness while landing and spiking a 9-inch gun. He was awarded the Medal of Honor for his conduct in that action.
