Barge # 62, a 1200-ton (displacement) wooden derrick barge, was built at Kingston, New York, in 1904. On 6 April 1918, while owned by McAllister Brothers of New York City, she was inspected by the Third Naval District for possible Navy service and assigned the registry ID # 2729. Barge # 62's purchase was authorized in June 1918 and she entered Navy service sometime in that year. Renamed Floating Derrick # 39, in October 1919 she was employed by the Third Naval District. In mid-1920, or thereabouts, she became YD-39 and was later converted to a freight lighter and renamed YF-197. She was disposed of in 1931.
This page features our only view of Barge # 62, which was the U.S. Navy's Floating Derrick # 39 (later YD-39) and YF-197 in 1918-1931.
