S.S. Jean (American Freighter, 1909)
Served as USS Jean (ID # 1308) in 1918-1919. Later S.S. Margarita Calafati, Gladstone, Sports, and Magdalena

Jean, a 3125 gross ton (6850 tons displacement) freighter, was built at Newport News, Virginia, in 1909. In around September 1917 she was chartered by the Army, for whom she operated with a civilian crew, probably in European waters. The freighter returned to Newport News in August 1918 and was commissioned in the Navy there on 30 August 1918 as USS Jean (ID # 1308). After loading a cargo of Army supplies at Newport News the ship sailed from Halifax, Nova Scotia, in October in a convoy for Brest, France. Following calls at several French ports Jean returned to Newport News in late November. In late December she sailed from Hampton Roads for Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, where she discharged her cargo and loaded a shipment of coffee. Returning to New York in March, USS Jean was decommissioned on 15 April 1919 and delivered to the U.S. Shipping Board for simultaneous return to her owners, the A.H. Bull Steamship Company of New York City. The freighter was renamed Margarita Calafati in 1926, Gladstone in 1927, Sports in 1928, Magdalena in 1941, and Sports again in 1947. She was scrapped in 1954.

This page features the only views we have concerning the American freighter Jean, USS Jean (ID # 1308), and S.S. Margarita Calafati, Gladstone, Sports, and Magdalena.
