-- CIVILIAN SHIPS --

Virginian (American Steam Tug, 1904).
Previously named Blue Bell.
Served as USS Virginian in 1918-1919

Blue Bell, a 179-ton steam tug, was built in 1904 at Camden, New Jersey. Later renamed Virginian, she was acquired by the Navy for World War I service and placed in commission as USS Virginian (with no number in the "SP/ID" series) in about early 1918. The tug probably served in the Norfolk, Virginia, area during the rest of the war, and for some months after the November 1918 Armistice ended the fighting. She was returned to her owner in May 1919.

This page features our only view of the tug Virginian (previously named Blue Bell), which served as USS Virginian in 1918-1919.
