USS Arcadia (ID # 1605), 1919-1919

USS Arcadia, a 7138-ton (displacement) transport, was built in 1896-1897 at Belfast, Ireland, as a 5454 gross ton commercial steamship. In 1914 she was employed under the German flag and, when World War I broke out in Europe, took refuge in a U.S. port. Seized when the United States entered the conflict in April 1917, she was operated during the rest of the war as S.S. Arcadia, with a Navy armed guard detachment embarked to man her guns. In January 1919 the ship was transferred to the Navy and placed in commission as USS Arcadia (ID # 1605). From early February to mid-September 1919, while assigned to the Atlantic Fleet's Cruiser and Transport Force, she made five round-trip voyages between the U.S. East Coast and France, primarily for the purpose of bringing home U.S. military personnel, but also carrying cargo in both directions. Arcadia was decommissioned later in September and returned to the Shipping Board.

This page features the only view we have concerning USS Arcadia (ID # 1605).
