USS Breakwater (SP-681), 1917-1921

USS Breakwater, a 140 gross ton patrol vessel, minesweeper and tug, was built at Milton, Delaware, in 1907 as a steam fishing trawler. Owned by the Lewes Fishing Company of Lewes, Delaware, she was purchased by the Navy and placed in commission in May 1917 for World War I service. Breakwater was assigned to the 4th Naval District and operated in the mid-Atlantic Coast area for the remainder of the conflict and for several months after the November 1918 Armistice. In July 1919 she was ordered to the Panama Canal Zone to become part of Submarine Division 1. Following brief service in Central American waters, Breakwater was determined to be in poor condition and decommissioned in September 1920. She was sold in April 1921.

This page features the only view we have concerning USS Breakwater (SP-681).
