USS Euryale, a 7600-ton submarine tender, was built at Kearny, New Jersey, as the civilian ship Hawaiian Merchant. She was acquired by the the Navy while under construction and commissioned in December 1943. From March 1944 until April 1945, Euryale supported submarines in the southwestern Pacific area, primarily at Manus, Admiralty Islands and Fremantle, Australia. After briefly serving at Pearl Harbor, in August 1945 she went to Guam and the next month moved further west to Japanese waters. For the rest of the year, she was based at Sasebo, Japan, preparing Japanese submarines for disposal. Euryale escorted some of these former enemy undersea vessels on a voyage to Pearl Harbor in early 1946, then went on to the U.S. west coast. She was decommissioned in October 1946 and spent some twenty-five years as part of the Reserve Fleet. USS Euryale was transferred to the Maritime Administration in December 1971 and subsequently sold for scrapping.
