USS Fortune (1871-1922, later YT-11)

USS Fortune, a 420-ton iron screw tug, was built at Boston, Massachusetts. Though launched in March 1865 as part of the Civil War shipbuilding effort, she was not placed in commission until May 1871. Fortune operated along the U.S. East Coast, in the Gulf of Mexico and in the Caribbean during her first thirty years of service, primarily performing towing, icebreaking, transportation and survey duties. However, in 1899-1901 she was a gunnery training ship.

In October 1902, Fortune was assigned to the South Atlantic Fleet, and in May of the following year she went to the Pacific. She was a submarine tender at Mare Island, California, for much of the next decade. After nearly three years in reserve, in May 1915 Fortune recommissioned and steamed to Tutuila, Samoa, to serve as station ship. When the U.S. Navy implemented its hull number system in July 1920, she was designated YT-11. USS Fortune was decommissioned at Tutuila and sold there in May 1922.

This page features all the views we have concerning USS Fortune (1871-1922, later YT-11).
