USS Marcus (DD-321), 1921-1935

USS Marcus, a 1190-ton Clemson class destroyer built at San Francisco, California, was commissioned in February 1921. She served along the Pacific coast for most of her career, with voyages to Hawaii in 1925 and during 1927-1929, and a visit to the Caribbean area for U.S. Fleet maneuvers in 1927. USS Marcus was decommissioned at the end of May 1930 as part of a general swapping of destroyers that had served through the 1920s for others that were less worn by constant active service. She was stricken from the list of Naval vessels in January 1935 and sunk as a gunfire target in June of that year.

USS Marcus was named in honor of Lieutenant (Junior Grade) Arnold Marcus (1892-1917), who lost his life in July 1917, while commanding the submarine A-7.

This page features all the views we have concerning USS Marcus (DD-321).

Battle Fleet maneuvers off California, November 1926

Twelve Navy torpedo planes (probably SC-1 or CS-1 types) fly in formation over USS Marcus (DD-321) during the maneuvers.
"Over 100 Naval planes vied with 60 surface craft for tactical advantage in a war game which displayed every angle of Naval action except gun fire." (quoted from the original photo caption).
Admiral Richard H. Jackson was Commander-in-Chief at the time of these maneuvers.
