USS Sagadahoc (ID # 3311), 1918-1919.
Originally, and later, S.S. Sagadahoc (American Freighter, 1918).

Sagadahoc, a 6846 gross ton (13,600 tons displacement) freighter, was built by the Texas Steamship Co. at Bath, Maine. Completed in July 1918, she was commissioned in the Navy on 9 July as USS Sagadahoc (ID # 3311). After loading an Army cargo at New York the ship sailed in convoy for Verdun, France, where she arrived in mid-August. Returning to New York in September, Sagadahoc delivered her second Army cargo to Marseilles, France, in October. The freighter left New York in December on her third trip to France, delivered her cargo at La Pallice in January 1919, and arrived back at New York at the beginning of March. Between April and July the ship made another round-trip voyage from New York to La Pallice, also stopping at Bordeaux, France. USS Sagadahoc was decommissioned on 18 August 1919 and returned to the Shipping Board.

During her post-World War I commercial career the ship served with several small American shipping firms. On 3 December 1941, while en route from New York to South Africa, S.S. Sagadahoc was stopped at sea and searched by the German submarine U-124. When contraband cargo was discovered her crew was sent to the lifeboats. The ship was then torpedoed and sunk, with the loss of one life. The remainder of those on board were rescued several days later.

This page features the only views we have concerning S.S. Sagadahoc and USS Sagadahoc (ID # 3311).
