USS S-5, an 876-ton S-3 class submarine, was built by the Portsmouth Navy Yard, located in Kittery, Maine. She was commissioned in March 1920, and spent the next several months on trials, training and post-completion shipyard work. After leaving Boston Navy Yard at the end of August, S-5 was off Delaware Bay on 1 September 1920 when a practice dive went very wrong and she sank bow-first, with only her stern showing above the water. In a dramatic adventure, her exhausted crew was rescued during the next few days, and salvage attempts began. However, these were unsuccessful and S-5 settled to the bottom, where she was abandoned.
