USS Virginian, a 7914 gross ton transport, was built in 1903 at Sparrows Point, Maryland, as the civilian steamship Maine. In 1908 she was sold to the American-Hawaiian Steamship Company, who renamed her Virginian. The ship was acquired by the Navy in early 1919, placed in commission at the beginning of February of that year and converted for use bringing U.S. service personnel home from Europe. Virginian made her first round-trip trans-Atlantic voyage in March and April 1919, carrying cargo to France and returning with nearly 4200 Soldiers embarked. She made a second such trip in April and May, a third in June and her fourth in July and August. USS Virginian was decommissioned in mid-August 1919 and returned to her owner. She continued to operate commercially until 1947, when she was turned over to the U.S. Maritime Commission. After a little over a year in layup she was delivered to a scrapping company in April 1948.
This page features all the views we have concerning USS Virginian (ID # 3920) and the civilian freighter Maine, later Virginian, of 1903.
