
Winthrop, a 58 gross ton (80-foot length) harbor tug, was built in 1883 at Wilmington, Delaware, for commercial employment. She was acquired by the Navy in October 1918 and probably placed "in service", as opposed to entering commissioned status. Initially operating in southern New England waters, she was transferred to the New York City area by the spring of 1919 and to northern New England waters later in that year. Ordered for disposal at the end of October 1919, she was not actually sold until June 1921.
