NOTE: 1. In addition three Japanese U-boats were sunk in 1941, two attributed to accident, and one by ship-borne aircraft. 2. One of the German U-boats shown as being sunk by other causes in 1942 was lost in an old Greek minefield in the Aegean. 3. As the date of sinking of one German U-boat in 1942 is doubtful, it has been allotted half to a surface ship and half to shore based aircraft.
