Introduction

Purpose of Organization.--The purpose of military organization is to secure the most effective use of the men, weapons, and other resources of a body of troops.

The tables contained in Part II of this book are the Marine Corps Tables of Organization approved by the Commandant 27 March, 1944 (with changes of 22 July, 1944). The student should retain this book, since the tables included herein will be used in all the subcourses issued by the Correspondence School (unless other provisions are made).

Part I contains diagrams of the various units and an explanation of their composition and armament so that the new student will be better able to understand and use the tables. No attempt is made to explain the tactical use of the units covered, or the characteristics and employment of the weapons which they have. These subjects are discussed in other publications of the Marine Corps Schools.

VII

How to Use the Tables of Organization

In order to be able to read and use the Tables of Organization, one must understand the way in which they are arranged. To illustrate this, we will examine Table F-1 of Part II (Rifle Company, Infantry Battalion, Infantry Regiment).

The numbers across the top of the table head the vertical columns, the first of which contains the various ranks of the men within the rifle company. The remaining columns contain the various smaller units into which the unit as a whole can be broken (for example, columns 2 and 3 contain the company headquarters divided into headquarters section and a mortar section). When the unit contains sub-units which are identical, only one of the sub-units is shown under the columns (only one of the three rifle platoons in a company is shown). The last column indicates the total unit strength.

The numbers down the left-hand side of the table are for the horizontal lines, the principal (non-indented) headings in which indicate the various ranks (captain, lieutenant, first sergeant, etc.). Opposite each rank appear numerals which, by their position in appropriate columns, indicate the number of men of each rank attached to each of the several units. [For example, platoon sergeants (line 14) are found only in the platoon headquarters of the rifle platoons (column 9), making a total of one to each platoon (column 11); since there are three rifle platoons in a rifle company, this makes a total of three platoon sergeants to the company (column 12)].

Under certain of the ranks in column 1 appear indented items which designate the various duties performed by individuals of the rank concerned. (For example, a sergeant (line 16) may be a platoon guide, a section leader, a squad leader, or have other special duties.)

Opposite each of these duties appear numerals indicating the number of men engaged in such duty and the units to which they are attached. It should be noted that such numerals are in parentheses, emphasizing that they do not symbolize additional personnel, but are rather a breakdown of personnel already shown by figures not in parentheses. (For example, of the 18 sergeants in a rifle company (column 12, line 16), three are platoon guides (line 18) attached to platoon headquarters (column 9) of each of the three rifle platoons.)

Appearing next to some of the figures in the tables are small letters. These refer to notes at the end of each table which contain important supplementary information. Read such notes. (For instance, the small "c" means that the man is armed with a Carbine.)

PART I

Section 1
The Fire Team

1. a. The fire team, or fire group, is the smallest of all rifle units. It is usually kept intact and employed tactically as a unit. The members of the fire team are trained to work together very closely.

  1. The fire team consists of:
A corporal, team leader, armed with an Ml Riile.
    An automatic rifleman.
An assistant automatic rifleman armed with an Ml Rifle.
A rifleman armed with an Ml Iiille.

  2. The men of the fire team will also carry intrenching tools and such individual weapons as knives, bayonets, and hand grenades.

VII-1

Figure 2.--The Rifle Squad

VII-2

Section II
The Rifle Squad

2. a. The squad is a group of men organized primarily as a combat team. The squad is usually kept intact but may be broken into fire teams which are used on special missions. The squad leader himself may desire to use one fire team as a maneuver element while using the others as a base of fire or direct attack element.

  1. The squad consists of a sergeant, squad leader and three fire teams--a total of thirteen men. Since the squad leader carries a Carbine, the total armament of a squad is:

      Nine Ml Rifles.
      One Carbine.
      Three Automatic Rifles.

  2. A portable Flame Thrower, M2, is carried in the supply section of battalion headquarters for use by the squad when needed. Each squad may also carry a demolitions kit.

VII-3

Section 3
The Rifle Platoon

1. a. The rifle platoon consists of:

  1. The platoon headquarters consists of seven men:

A lieutenant, platoon commander, armed with a Carbine.
A platoon sergeant, armed with a Carbine.
A platoon guide, armed with an M1 Rifle.
A demolitions corporal, armed with an M1 Rifle.
Three messengers armed with M1 Rifles.
  2. Thus a rifle platoon is made up of one officer and forty-five men, armed with nine automatic rifles, five Carbines, and thirty-two M1 Rifles.

VII-5

VII-6

Section 4
The Light Machine Gun Section

4. a. The light machine gun section is the basic unit of the rifle company light machine gun platoon. It makes the light machine gun an integral weapon of the rifle company, greatly increasing the fire power of the company and strengthening its self-sufficiency.

  1. The light machine gun section consists of: Section headquarters. Two light machine gun squads.

  2. The section headquarters consists of a sergeant, section leader, armed with a Carbine and carrying field glasses.

  3. A light machine gun squad consists of a corporal, squad leader, and seven privates, two of whom man the light machine gun, while the other five supply ammunition. Each of these men carries a Carbine, but the basic weapon of the squad is the 30-caliber Browning machine gun, M1919A4.

5. a. The light machine-gun platoon consists of:

  1. The platoon headquarters consists of:

A lieutenant (platoon leader), a gunnery sergeant, an ammunition corporal, and two runners.

  2. cSince each section has two light machine guns (.30 caliber Browning, M1019A4), the platoon has a total of six light machine guns. The rifle company headquarters carries six heavy machine guns (MOcaliber, Browning, M1917A1) in reserve to be used in place of or in addition to the light machine guns when the tactical situation demands.

Section 6
The 60mm Mortar Section

6. a. The 60mm mortar section is a unit included in company headquarters of the rifle company. It greatly increases the fire power of the company by the addition of high angle weapons.

  1. The 60mm mortar section consists of:

Section leaders--a lieutenant and a sergeant.
Three mortar squads of six men each.
  2. Each mortar squad carries one 60mm mortar. The men are armed individually with Carbines.

VII-11

Section 7
The Rifle Company

7. a. The rifle company consists of:

  1. Thus the company as a whole is composed of two hundred forty-seven men and seven officers. Its weapons include three 60mm mortars, three AT rocket launchers (the bazooka--carried in company headquarters section), six light machine guns (with six heavy machine guns carried in reserve), twenty-seven automatic rifles, 123 M1 Rifles and 97 Carbines. In addition, its headquarters section has one jeep with a trailer.

VII-12

VII-16

Section 8
The 81mm Mortar Section

8. a. The 81mm mortar section consists of: Section headquarters. Two mortar squads.

  1. The section headquarters consists of a sergeant, section leader, and ten men who perform duties as observers, ammunition carriers, or telephone linemen.

  2. The 81mm mortar squad consists of a corporal, squad leader, and six men who are the crew for one 81mm mortar.

  3. This section has hand carts provided, as well as a jeep and trailer in section headquarters. The men carry individual arms as listed in the tables.

VII-17

Section 9
The 81mm Mortar Section

9. a. The 81mm mortar platoon is included in headquarters company of the infantry battalion. It consists of:

  1. The platoon headquarters consists of two lieutenants and six men whose duties are shown in the tables.

  2. In addition to the four 81mm mortars carried in the four squads of this platoon, four 60mm mortars are carried in platoon headquarters as alternate weapons.

VII-18

Section 10
Communication Platoon

10. a. The communication platoon is a part of battalion headquarters. It furnishes the battalion commander with the means of communication to subordinate, adjacent, and higher units and consists of:

  1. The platoon headquarters consists of a lieutenant (battalion communications officer) and two men, who supervise and coordinate the work of the sections.

  2. The message center and messenger section sets up the message center, which is the agency charged with the receipt, transmission, and delivery of all messages except those by telephone, personal contact, mail, or otherwise specially authorized. The messenger unit includes all messengers within the unit and those sent to the battalion commander by subordinate and supporting units.

  3. The wire section sets up the wire net, both within the command post and in advance of any change in the location of the command post.

  4. The radio, visual, and panel section provides communication by radio, by visual means (all signals received by the eye, including flags, lamps, and pyrotechnics), and by panels to aircraft.

VII-19

Section 11
Intelligence and Supply Sections

11. a. These sections are a part of battalion headquarters and are the lowest intelligence and supply units.

  1. The intelligence section is commanded by the intelligence officer, Bn-2 (who is listed in the tables under headquarters section, since he is also a member of the battalion staff). The men of the section are trained to aid the Bn-2 in keeping the battalion commander informed of the enemy situation by keeping intelligence documents up to date and by acting as scouts or observers.

  2. The supply section operates directly under the supply officer of the battalion who functions as Bn-4 and as battalion quartermaster (listed under headquarters section). The men of this section receive all supplies delivered to the battalion and operate the service of supply within the battalion.

VII-20

Section 12
Headquarters Section, Battalion Headquarters

12. a. The headquarters section includes the battalion commander and'his staff (both commissioned and enlisted), the medical personnel of the battalion, and certain specialists.

  1. The battalion is the smallest unit provided with a staff. The staff duties for all units having staffs are divided into four main parts or sections:

    1. Personnel.
    2. Intelligence.
    3. Operations (or plans and training).
    4. Supply.
  2. Both the staff officer and his section are known and referred to by the above numbers, with a letter prefix to indicate whether the officer is part of a battalion, regiment, or division staff. Thus the intelligence officer of a battalion would be known as the "Bn-2", while his section would be called the "2-Section". Similarly, the intelligence officer in the regiment would be R-2, and the division D-2.

  3. Certain staff officers of the battalion have command, as well as staff, duties. The Bn-2 commands the intelligence section and the Bn-4 the supply section, in addition to serving on the battalion staff. Staff officers of the battalion may have other duties as well--for example, the Bn-4 also acts as battalion quartermaster. In the case of the staffs of larger units, however, dual assignments are unusual due to the heavier demands of the staff sections, so that the regiment has both an R-4 and a regimental quartermaster.

  4. The battalion executive officer acts as the principal assistant and adviser to the commander and may be given the job of coordinating the work of the different staff sections. The chemical officer is responsible for protecting the battalion against gas. The two liaison officers maintain personal contact with regiment supporting or adjacent units for the battalion commander.

  5. The enlisted men within headquarters section either serve on the staff sections or perform special duties, such as demolitions, camouflage, or chemical details. A group of clerks are responsible for the paper work of both the battalion and the rifle companies.

  6. The medical section is composed entirely of naval personnel--two doctors and forty hospital corpsmen. This section is charged with the medical care, treatment and evacuation of the personnel of the battalion. In combat it is customary to attach some of the corpsmen to the rifle units while the remainder maintain the battalion aid station.

VII-21

Section 13
Headquarters Company, Infantry Battalion

13. a. The headquarters company of the Marine infantry battalion consists of:

  1. This unit is the brain and nerve center of the battalion. Only the mortar platoon has a tactical function.

VII-22

Section 14
The Infantry Battalion

14. a. The Marine infantry battalion consists of:

  1. The battalion is composed of 35 marine officers and 877 marines, plus 42 medical people. Its fire power is tremendous, with a variety of weapons including 27 flame throwers, 9 bazookas, 4 81mm and 13 60mm mortars, 18 heavy and 18 light machine guns, 81 automatic rifles, 424 M1 Rifles, and 449 Carbines.

VII-25

Figure 9.--Marine Infantry Battalion
Figure 9.--Marine Infantry Battalion.

Section 15
Weapons Company, Infantry Regiment

15. a. The weapons company of the Marine infantry regiment provides larger caliber weapons for use mainly against tanks or fortifications. It consists of:

  1. Company headquarters is composed of a headquarters section, a communication section, and a maintenance section. As additional company armament, headquarters section has six light machine guns and ten .50 caliber machine guns.

  2. The 75mm gun platoon is made up of a platoon headquarters and four gun sections, each section armed with one 75mm gun mounted on a radio-equipped halftrack. Five light machine guns and four bazookas are also carried by this platoon.

  3. Each 37mm gun platoon contains a platoon headquarters and four gun sections, each section having one 37mm gun on an antitank mount. Four bazookas are carried in platoon headquarters.

VII-26

Section 16
Headquarters Section
Regimental Headquarters

16. a. The headquarters section of regimental headquarters is composed of the regimental commander and his staff. The staff functions are divided into four main parts just as in the battalion. In addition, there are certain administrative staff officers, liaison officers, and technical staff advisers, such as the regimental munitions officer, medical officers, dental officer, and chaplains. Liaison officers from supporting units such as artillery, tanks, aviation, etc., while not a part of the regimental staff, act as advisers to the commander and his staff in the technical use of their respective units.

  1. The regimental commander is responsible for the administration, supply, training, and combat efficiency of the outfit, and for its tactical employment within the limits set by higher authority. Thus he is really responsible for everything that the regiment does or fails to do.

  2. The regimental executive officer is the second in command of the unit and acts as assistant to the commander. He coordinates the work of the staff sections and assists in the control of subordinate units. He may also obtain basic decisions from the commander and make any necessary supplementary decisions as the situation requires.

  3. The adjutant (R-l) is responsible for the personnel and the administrative work of the regiment. He has two assistants, one of whom acts as classification officer.

  4. The intelligence officer (R-2) commands the intelligence section, and is in charge of the collection of all available information of the enemy and the terrain over which the unit is operating or is to operate; the determination of the meaning of all the information thus collected; and the preparation from it of intelligence for transmission to the regimental commander and to higher, lower, and neighboring headquarters. He has two staff assistants, one of whom is an aerial photograph interpreter.

  5. The operations officer (R-3) has charge of all training while the unit is not in action. During combat he keeps the commander informed of the condition of the regiment and of the situation as it progresses; drafts and issues orders when instructed to do so by the commander; and continually studies the situation so as to be ready for emergencies or future operations. He has an assistant who is regimental demolitions officer.

  6. The supply officer (R-4) deals with the supply of the regiment from the viewpoint of command, that is, he arranges his supplv plan to fit the tactical plan of the conmiander.

VII-27

(The regimental quartermaster deals with supply from the viewpoint of procurement.) The R-4 has two assistants, one of whom is maintenance and motor transport officer and the other ordnance and munitions officer.

  1. The chemical officer is responsible for protecting the regiment against gas attacks.

  2. The two liaison officers are assigned to division or adjacent unit headquarters to keep the regimental commander informed of the activities of that unit.

  3. Naval personnel of the staff include two chaplains, a dentist, two doctors, and hospital corpsmen.

VII-28

Section 17
Headquarters and Service Company
Infantry Regiment

17. a. The headquarters and service company of the Marine infantry regiment consists of a company headquarters and the regimental headquarters.

  1. Regimental headquarters, in addition to the headquarters section already discussed, contains:

      Intelligence section.
      Paymaster section.
      Communication platoon.
      Service platoon.
  2. The intelligence section assists the R-2 in the collection and preparation of information of the enemy.

  3. The paymaster section operates under the command of the regimental paymaster and keeps all the pay accounts of the regiment.

  4. The communication platoon is made up in the same fashion and performs the same duties for the regiment as does the similar platoon in the battalion. It also lays wire to the battalions, and keeps in communication with them, with adjacent regiments, and with attached or supporting units.

  5. The service platoon consists of

      Platoon headquarters.
      Supply section.
      Munitions and ordnance section.
      Maintenance section. Property section.
      Commissary section.
  6. This platoon procures and distributes supplies and munitions for the regiment in accordance with the plans made by R-4.

VII-29

Section 18
The Infantry Regiment

18. a. The Marine infantry regiment normally consists of: Headquarters and service company. Weapons company. Three infantry battalions.

  1. As such, the regiment is one of three infantry regiments in a Marine division, which has an artillery regiment, an engineer battalion, a pioneer battalion, and special troops in addition. A regiment on a separate mission is usually reinforced with artillery, engineers, and other units.

VII-30

VII-31

Section 19
Designation of Marine Corps Units

19. a. The term "Fleet Marine Force" shall be used as a general term to designate as a whole those organized units of the Marine Corps which are intended for overseas service with the fleet.

  1. When Marine Corps units are organized they will be given official designations by Headquarters.

  2. Divisions will be given a numerical designation and preserve their Marine Corps identity by the insertion of the word "Marine" between the numeral and the name which is descriptive of the unit, thus:

      1st Marine Division.
      2d Marine Division.
  3. Regiments will be given a numerical designation and preserve their Marine Corps identity by the addition of the word "Marines" after the numeral, thus:

      6th Marines.
      10th Marines.
      16th Marines.
In order to identify the type of regiment, numerals are allotted as follows:
    1. Numbers 1 to 9 inclusive, and numbers 21 to 29 inclusive, to infantry regiments.
Numbers 10 to 14 inclusive to artillery regiments.

NOTE: Marine Divisions at present are organized as follows:

      1st Division: 1st, 5th, and 7th Marines (infantry); 11th Marines (artillery).
      2d Division: 2d, 6th, and 8th Marines (infantry); 10th Marines (artillery).
      3d Division: 3d, 9th, and 21st Marines (infantry); 12th Marines (artillery).
      4th Division: 23d, 24th, and 25th Marines (infantry); 14th Marines (artillery).
      5th Division: 26th, 27th, and 28th Marines (infantry); 13th Marines (artillery).
The 4th, 22d, and 29th Marines are separate infantry regiments.
  4. Headquarters and service companies or organizations which have a numerical designation will be designated by the name descriptive of the unit and organization which they serve, thus: Headquarters and Service Company, 6th Marines or 1st Battalion, 21st Marines.

VII-33

  1. Companies and batteries, forming a part of a higher tactical unit such as a battalion or a regiment, will be designated alphabetically. (The equivalent organization of an infantry company in the artillery is called a "battery").

  2. Battalions and companies composing divisional special troops will be assigned numerals, according to the division to which they belong, thus: 1st Engineer Battalion (1st Division); 2d Signal Company (2d Division).

  3. When a battalion is formed it will be assigned a regimental numerical designation regardless of whether the regimental headquarters is formed at the time, thus: 1st Battalion, 30th Marines; 3d Battalion, 15th Marines; or it will be designated a separate battalion with a numerical designation, thus: 1st Separate Marine Infantry Battalion: 1st Separate Marine 155mm Gun Battalion.
