CIPM may be interested in knowing about the recently inaugurated IPMnet.
In turn, basic information about CIPM, as well as being placed on the
mailing list for the Center's newsletter (I'm looking at the only copy
here, vol. 1, no. 2, last June) would be appreciated. We propose to include
a short feature about CIPM in the next IPMnet NEWS, so would like to have
any material from CIPM as soon as feasible. Thanks, and best wishes for
continued success with CIPM. ---A.E. Deutsch

NEW ELECTRONIC SOURCE FOR
IPM INFORMATION LAUNCHED
--------------------------
IPMnet is up and running--well, jogging at this point.
The concept: harness the nearly instantaneous, round-the-clock
access of the Internet to make information about international,
environmentally-friendly pest management more widely available. The result:
IPMnet--the Global IPM Information Service, offering integrated pest
managment support on-line 24 hours/day.
IPMnet is designed to provide researchers, technical specialists, and
producers--as well as others who may be interested--with a free source of
current international IPM information. It is also structured to create a
world-wide discussion and debate forum for strengthening IPM.
IPMnet, co-sponsored by the Consortium for International Crop
Protection (CICP) and the National Biological Impact Assessment Program
(NBIAP, of the U.S. Department of Agriculture), was created in late
1993 to assemble and disseminate global information that will support IPM
research, teaching, technology implementation, and policy development. The
IPMnet electronic bulletin board contains IPMnet News (a newsletter),
an information exchange forum, technical reports, and databases.
IPMnet eventually will provide institutions and individuals with
access to a body of information that could be difficult and expensive to
collect through other means. In addition to serving as an information
resource, IPMnet is also a channel for contacting others working on the
same problems, and it can serve as a locator for finding specialized
equipment or materials.
There is NO subscription fee or cost to use IPMnet, other than for
using Internet. The objective is to provide information and services to as
wide and varied a constituency as feasible. The only usage requirements are
that first-time contacts complete a brief questionnaire indicating
professional interests and expertise, and, second, that IPMnet users be
willing to interact with others in the network. The professional profiles
of IPMnet participants will help build an expertise database that can
become a useful component of the network. (Hard copy registration
questionnaires can be requested from: CICP, Cornell University,
NYAES, Geneva, NY 14456-0462, USA; * voice: 315-787-2252 * fax: 315-787-
2276).
IPMnet's co-sponsors point out that the bulletin board concept of
electronic information has great potential, but only if the community
served participates. If IPMnet is to fulfill its envisioned role, national
and international organizations and individuals need to actively take part
in using and cooperatively supporting the service. That means sharing--as
well as seeking--information, offering opinions, and providing guidance. Of
course, IPMnet welcomes any existing IPM-related databases that could be
shared with the international IPM community.
IPMnet is accessed through any of several communication programs or
links to reach telnet. At <telnet>, keyboard in <cicp.biochem.vt.edu>
and follow the on-screen prompts. If there's a problem (yes, it's
happened), communicate with the system operator at <cicp@vt.edu>.
CICP and NBIAP invite broad participation in IPMnet as well as comments
and suggestions for its improvement. The goal is to collectively support
and expand internatonal IPM and generate a positive force for global
benefit.
