WHAT:  A one day conference about society's relationship to planet earth...
	"Symbiosis: Toward a Healthy Integration of Science, Society,
 	and Planet"
DATE:	September 20, 1997
TIME:	8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. 
WHERE:	Washington & Lee High School, Arlington, VA

The Northern Virginia Regional Park Authority and other organizations in
the Washington, DC metropolitan area will be hosting a one day conference
intended to catalyze local efforts toward regional sustainability.  The
conference, entitled "Symbiosis: Toward a Healthy Integration of Science,
Society, and Planet" is intended to (1) promote dialogue on and
understanding of the interrelationships between society,science, and
Earth's living systems, and (2) to promote ideas for cooperative action
based on this understanding. 

 The morning program will feature three nationally known speakers: Daniel
Botkin, professor of Biology at George Mason University; William
McDonough, Architect and Dean of the University of Virginia School of
Architecture; and author Jeremy Rifkin, President of the Foundation on
Economic Trends. The afternoon segment of the program will include a panel
discussion that will engage the key speakers in a dialogue regarding the
applicability of their ideas to projects and action in the Washington, DC
area.  The panel will be followed by discussion groups where conference
attendees will develop ideas and recommendations for cooperative actions
among citizens and community groups to address modern-day issues and
problems. 

A reception will follow the conference and allow further opportunities for
informal conversation and idea exchange. 

The cost of the conference is $25 payable in advance.  Students can attend
for $15.
