One of my neighbors here in Oregon told me that
"Cut trees for posts when the new oak leaves are as big as a squirrel's ear,
and the bark will slip right off."
He was right. I've watched poor sods slaving away with a drawknife for hours
in summer and fall, but bark on logs cut at the right time pops off in
seconds with a spud or flat spade.
