New executive education seminars scheduled

The School's Executive Education Program continues to serve communication professionals with new seminars this spring.

On April 19, the Maynard Institute is bringing its "Total Community Coverage: Uncovering Our Prejudices" seminar to the School. Maynard Program Director Erna Smith will use Robert Maynard's fault lines of race, class, gender, generation and geography as a framework for interactive analysis of newspaper and television news coverage.

"Our first experience with Total Community Coverage was in 1996. It was so important to our company that we have developed a TCC workshop with Maynard every year since," said Gail Bulfin, training and reader editor for The Sun-Sentinel in Orlando. "It challenges you to get back to basics, creates an atmosphere of rediscovery and humbles you with the power of balanced coverage."

On May 18, the Executive Education Program will conduct a seminar titled "Using Photoshop for Publications: Hands-on Training for Beginning and Intermediate Users." The seminar will focus on designing brochures and other marketing materials.

These seminars will follow three programs conducted in February and March. "Redefining Marketing: An Integrated Marketing Communication Seminar" was held Feb. 23. The seminar featured interactive sessions that explored the driving forces in marketing — forces that are changing the way advertising, marketing and public relations professionals communicate.

Journalists also gathered at the School on March 2 and 3 for the seminar, "Covering North Carolina's Latino Community." Sessions focused on topics including the dynamics of Latino immigration, census results, religion, healthcare issues, and tips on writing creative and accurate stories about the Latino community.

On March 23, television news producers met for "Surviving the Firing Line: Producing TV News." The seminar featured sessions about turning complex and nonvisual topics into memorable stories, producing compelling live shots, making responsible decisions, and communicating and building relationships in the newsroom.

Nelson Mumma Jr. is a second-year master's student in the public relations sequence.
