Freedom Forum Ph.D. program ending

The School recently learned that the Freedom Forum Ph.D. Fellows Program will end after the current Fellows complete their programs.

The Freedom Forum is canceling many of its programs to concentrate its financial resources on building a new $300 million Newseum on Pennsylvania Avenue in Washington, D.C. In addition to its program at the School, the group is closing some of its own offices, including its San Francisco operation.

Dean Richard Cole said Charles Overby, head of the Freedom Forum, wants to continue working with the School, its faculty members and students in other ways.

"Charles likes our program enormously and has invested a great deal of attention to it over the years of its operation," Cole said. "The ending of the program has nothing to do with its quality, which has been nothing short of excellent."

The Freedom Forum began the program in 1994, providing funds for students' tuition, research and travel expenses.

Funding for the current Freedom Forum Fellows will continue until they complete their studies.
