Project Links Copyright Policy
Project Links developers primarily develop original materials such as text, graphics and applets. However, in some instances, it may be useful for developers to use materials which have been created by others in developing our own modules. Here is Project Links' policy on doing this:
It is generally OK to use someone else's material in your module, but keep these things in mind:
- You must keep a record of material which is not copyrighted by RPI. To do this, be sure to cite the source right on your Project Links module web page. An example is:
From Allison Hunter at SUNY Albany.
- If / when you know you will use the material in a module in its final form, then you as the developer are responsible for securing permission to use the materials on a web page. After you secure permission, be sure to change your citation to something like this:
Copyright © 1997 Allison Hunter. Used with permission.
- Project Links is not prepared to pay royalties for using someone else's material, so keep this in mind as you plan your modules.
Some specific cases have arisen in Project Links. An example is an applet which a developer has found and would like to use in a module. Another case is a video which a developer would like to digitize and use in a module.
In the case of the applet, the developer should check with the applet owner to get permission to use it. In the case of the video, it is likely that this particular video will incur royalty fees in order for it to be used on Project Links web pages. In this instance, it would be better to look for royalty-free video sources instead. See the media resource page for royalty-free video sources.
