Re: [nafex] M9 hardiness (apple)

Given 3 or 4 ft of snow cover all winter, Wolf River/M.9 just might make it in Prince
George -- but if Malling 9 gets out into the real world of Prince George, Wolf River
will be left hanging out to dry.

In our experience, including considerable work with artificial freezing, we would
rate Budavgosky 9 and Ottawa 3 at about the same level of hardiness as McIntosh and
Cortland, with Malling 9 less tolerant by 3 to 5 degrees. That may not seem like a
lot, but it can be critical in marginal areas. The Polish stock, P.2, seems to be
just a little more hardy than Bud.9 and O.3 in midwinter and also has the major
advantange of beginning growth activity considerably later in the spring. Budagovsky
491 is still hardier midwinter, but has the disadvantage of extreme brittleness, plus
being much more dwarfing than the other stocks.

This P.2 does seem to have some potential for the North Woods; we've yet to get a
real assessment on its production potential (the NC-140 group has been collecting
data for some years now). Not nearly as good a nursery subject as M.9 and Bud.9 --
some difficulty in establishing liners, and growth ceases early, making budding time
more limited.
