Re: [nafex] abandoned orchards
dwalsh and wchase
i noticed you are B.C. folk, and it remindd me that 15 years back I was
flying over your fine province and the fellow sitting next to me pointed out
a remote valley that he'd just been in , hired by the Canadian (provincial?)
government to hike into remote homesteads for the sole purpose of cutting
down abandoned apple orchards!!! Presumably to rid the greater area of
potential harbored pests. I wonder if he suceeded? I wonder how many years
and how many orchards and how many old varieties? Could make a person
downright agitated just conjuring it. However, now that that ive let this
cat out of the bag-and i swear its the truth- perhaps there is hope, if a
B.C.er could trace this "program" and get a map of where are now either
rotted stumps or, much better, stumps that have long since sprouted and
are a genetic path to the past. just a thought.
