Hi Tom:

My only beef with using sand as a rooting medium is that it did not
drain as well as I expected.  The bottom 4" (100mm in Canada) was
saturated.  There are obvious workarounds:  Coarser sand .or. perelite
in the bottom of the container .or. some way to wick the water out of
the bottom (strongly suspect capillary action/surface tension is what
kept water in bottom).

Objection does not apply to beds outside.
