    I had these where I previously lived.  These plants are much too 
small (and I wouldn't think they'd already have dead wood).  One of 
the "North" series you list grows to about 12-18" tall (here in zone 
6) and the other to 18-24" (I honestly can't remember which was the 
taller of the two), and I'd say about at least a foot in diameter.  
When you say they are "3" year old plants is that you've had them, 
plus the year or two they were at the nursery?  Then they definitely 
are not happy.
