[nafex] Re: Harold Martin
I am so sorry to hear that Harold is gone. I got him to come speak at a
garden club meeting some 7-8 years ago, and he was just delightful. I am
only sorry I didn't keep in touch with him, from all the things Lucky says
he got involved in. I remember him talking about these topset garlics we
grow in this part of the country, the way they always get away from us and
seed themselves around. In digging the garden that spring, he'd pulled
enough of the sprouts to make a handsized bundle, and rather than toss them,
he decided to take them to a home economics professor who could cook up
about anything. On the way to her office, he passed a girl from India.
When he got to the prof's office, that girl was right behind him. She was
very excited, and very shy. She said that in India, they always have a
little chopped green garlic in their salads, and she was missing it
terribly. What he was carrying was exactly what she was used to eating. I
guess we Americans never learned to eat our garlic that way because the
mature cloves keep well here. Donna
