I am not knowledgeble about the chemical or harmonal characteristics of 
plants, it is too deep for me. I have observed the pruning during the dormant 
stage of a plant seems to induce an increase ingrowth...the harder a plant is 
pruned the greater the new growth. Pruning during the growing stage has the 
opposite effect...it seems toremove material without encouraging or 
initiating a lot of new growth.

There are limits to the amount of material that can safely be removed at 
either time.
