Re: [nafex] old scionwood

Del,
I've had surprisingly good results with old wrinkled scionwood that
has been mailed to me, lost in the mail, and took 2 1/2 weeks to get to me
on a couple of occasions. Here'w what I did.
1/ Cut BOTH ends of the sticks off until you hit green in the wood.
2/ Float the sticks in icewater for 4 to 8 hours. I found they
rehydrated amazingly well.
3/ I floated the sticks in 10% household bleach and 90% water for a
couple of minutes, rinsed very well, and this worked to get rid of any mold
or fungus on the scionwood.
4/ Graft immediately or store as normal in a fridge with damp (not
wet) paper towling in the sealed plastic bag at about +2C (36F).
I was personally surprised at the good results I got. Good luck.

ps ground still covered with snow due to a 10 inch heavy wet snowstorm last
weekend. Temperatures have been well below normal for the last 8 weeks
here. Here in Alberta we are absolutely convinced global warming is a myth,
and a new ice age is starting. I might be able to cut dormant scionwood
well into July :) the way it feels.
