[nafex] Tanglefoot

Doc may be busy so I'll tell you ..

Tanglefoot is a very very very sticky substance that can be used to trap pests.
It is commonly used in this area to trap Winter moth and Rhododendron root
weevils. It is best used to trap insects which climb up or down the tree truck as
part of their life cycle. It would deter voles and rabbits. Kittens and young
children can also get stuck to it. I know of a case where the kitten got
Tanglefoot on its paws, the owner used paint thinner to remove the Tanglefoot and
the kitten died. It absorbed the paint thinner through its paws and was poisoned.

BUT

Tanglefoot should never be put directly on the tree trunk or in a few years you'll
have an area completely covered with dead insects and the pests are now able to
walk over the dead bodies safely and infest your tree.

One should put Saran warp or some plastic around the tree first and then paint it
with Tanglefoot (warm Tanglefoot in microwave to make it easier to spread). The
Saran wrap can be removed in the spring and reapplied each Fall.

When working with Tanglefoot, you will get it all over you!!! And it is very
sticky!!

I think the latex paint with Thiram would be much easier to apply and Jim Cummings
says it works.
