Re: GM DNA in the human digestive tract
Hi Steve,
Essentially all of the GM crops presently being sold contain an
antibiotic resistance gene (called a selectable marker). Efforts have
been made to create selectable markers that can be deleted from the
original plant selected but these are still on the drawing board or in
some cases a herbicide tolerance gene has been used as a selectable
marker but those stains are not yet commonly used in commercial
crops. The removable selectable markers depend on genetic technology
related to terminator. Your information on antibiotic selectable
markers making up less than 20% of commercial GM crops is easily
refuted by information on regulation documents from USDA,EPA and the
Canadian food inspection agency. Sincerely, Joe

I seem to remember reading several years ago that the use of
antibiotic-resistant gene markers is only one method of genetic
modification and comprised a relatively small share of total GM crops
(<20%). Has that changed? Can someone with good stats confirm or deny
this?
