Howdy, all--
Heidi asked, regarding the Wisconsin Alumni Research Foundation:
I'd be interested to know what products they are talking about. Does
anybody have that information?
Heide
Here is their Web site:
http://www.warf.ws/
Here is a super-brief "history of WARF" page, focusing mostly on
high-tech medical developments:
http://www.warf.ws/aboutus/index.jsp?catid=39&subcatid=27
My guess is that this site is designed to appeal to upscale alumni,
faculty, and others, who might want to leave WARF money in their
wills, as well as "industry" investors looking for a hot product for
richer consumers, or something that can be plugged into existing
industrial sectors.
WARF appears to be proud of privatizing the public sector:

Heidi, go to the page on the site called "For industry: available
technologies":
http://www.warf.org/forindustry/accessible_techtree.jsp?area=2
As you click on each category, it will expand, and you can examine
the various technologies available. Some of them, like improved lines
of winter wheat, are not designed for commercial use. Others, like
the bioengineered sweetness protein from brazzein, are.
If your interest is Ag, click on that category.
The summaries of each technology indicate, for instance, the status
of the patent, whether PVP Protection has been applied for, etc. For
the general reader, it's often very hard to tell from the "product"
briefs whether the food technology in question involves classical
breeding or biotechnology.
