[SANET-MG] FDA to declare meat and milk from cloned animals to be safe

June 22, 2005
Associated Press
WASHINGTON (Kyodo) -- The Financial Times was cited as reporting
Wednesday on its website that meat and milk from cloned farm animals is
about to be declared safe for human consumption by the U.S. Food and
Drug Administration.
The paper quoted FDA officials as saying they have concluded after a
four-year assessment process that cloned animals and their progeny would
be as safe to eat as conventionally bred animals and that cloning is
acceptable from the viewpoint of animal welfare.
The FDA assessment analyzed the biochemical composition of meat and milk
from cloned animals and their offspring and found it was the same as
that from conventional animals, it said.
