suppression is by what is known as "eco-sterilizing".  there is a finite amount of space within any solution, that is its holding capacity for life.  if you fill all of the spaces with probiotic life forms, there with be no available room for pathogenic forms to live.  both forms take to different environments to live.  most pathogens thrive in anaerobic conditions, that is why compost teas must have an air pump.  any space within the solution that become less than oxygenated  would have the possibility to become breeding grounds for the pathogens.  em, effective microorganism,  is a collection of probiotic forms that work in an anaerobic environ.  these are reported to inhibit not so friendly forms as well as use them as food.  check out soilfoodweb.com... some leaders in the information revolution
