This is a question that's been rolling around in the back of my mind
for some time. Seems to me, rank amateur that I am, that 'locally
adapted' is an important concept.
Surely microorganisms are subject to evolutionary pressures, just
like everything else. Doesn't it make sense that there are/could be
subtle differences in the soil microbes found in widely separated
forests?

I'm not arguing for/against using forest floor microorganisms, or
importing Alaska Humus, just wondering about the 'local' angle.

We live in the middle of a mixed forest which hasn't been logged in
about 100 years. When I dig into the piles of woody stuff that I have
tossed under the shade of low fir boughs to slowly biodegrade I find
strands of fungi. I didn't innoculate the stuff I tossed in there,
and it's only been there on the surface under the tree for a couple
of years. I assume that the fungi I find is the same stuff that's in
the soil under the tree.

I use that passive compost (is it compost?) to mulch the vegetable
garden over winter, along with leaves from the alder trees. Seems to
me that I could use that same stuff to start an oatmeal-accelerated
compost for my brewer. Any comments?

What's the O horizon?
