[compost_tea] IMOs, KNFA, soil species diversity

Hi all,

I have been reading everybody's comments and
questions with great interest. I checked into the
Korean Natural Farming Association (thank you Chris!)
and their work with IMOs. Here is a link:

Basically they bury a box of rice in the soil to let
the organisms colonize it (but probably not every
species in the soil likes to grow on rice), then they
add sugar and let it grow in solution (no mention of
aeration, so must be anaerobic) for a week or two.

As to diversity, I have been investigating ways
to assess that. I have hit upon some work being done
by Norm Pace at CU Boulder, he mostly works in extreme
environments but the methods should apply to soil
organisms as well. He is using PCR to amplify the
rRNA in a sample, then cloning and sequencing (I am
attaching some papers). Does anyone know if someone
is working in a similar vein on soil organisms? I'll
try some more searches. It is so easy to get lost in
a search pathway! Anyway, I am still pondering it all
and have been inspired by you all to get started
brewing. I have some questions so am posting those
separately.

Elizabeth
