Chiapas update

While the situation in Mexico and particularly in the state
of Chiapas is already fading out of the news, no true
agreement has been reached between the Mexican government
and the Zapatista movement, in spite of President Zedillo's
halting of the offensive against the rebels. There is in
fact evidence that, as the spotlights turn away from the
region, human right abuses may be occurring, in the form
of threats and even arrest warrants against opposition
members, NGOs, indigenous organizations, and so forth,
questionably accused to have Zapatista connections.
Hardships for the Mayan populations living in the conflict
area are to be expected. This is not a time to forget
about this situation. If you wish to register your concern
for the respect of human rights in Chiapas and the rest of
Mexico; call for a peaceful resolution of the conflict;
and request that efforts, both in Mexico and the US, be
concentrated on productive, rather than speculative,
investments and on overcoming the social and economic
problems of the indigenous and campesino populations
of Mexico, here are some mail and e-mail addresses/fax and
