It sounds to me like she has a condition called allopetia areata (sp?)  I 
first heard of it in Cosmetology school years ago, and a student at that 
school had it.  The dr told her it was hormone related and subsequently 
put her on massive doses of something.  It cleared up but she then had 
many other problems.

I'm not sure how this is treated herbally or naturopathically, but I can 
direct you to a great website that might be able to help.

this is the ND I work for and she is really good.  I bet she would be able 
to help your niece with this problem.  I know you could at least get the 
lavendar oil from her if you want.
