I used to grow an "underground garden" in the crawl space of our home 
outside Chicago, and found only one vegetable that really performed under 
lights (at least enough to make it worthwhile).  That was a tomato named 
"Basket King", a large cherry-type.  It cranked out clusters of delicious 
fruit all winter for us.  Incidentally, I tried at least a dozen other 
varieties, and they either didn't produce under all-artificial lights or 
didn't have particularly good flavor.  I was using a combination of 
regular shop-light florescent tubes and plant grow-lights, but didn't see 
much difference in the performance of the Basket Kings.  Don Chapman.
