Orange you glad...
It's mandarin season, and our friend, Steve Pilz, who manages the stone
fruit orchard with Bryan, is now into his organic mandarin season. Steve has
been running his grandfather's Penryn citrus orchard in tandem with him for
the last ten years. Steve had wanted to take the orchard organic many years
ago and, now that he has management control, he's able to do so. When
Steve's mandarins run out, we'll have some available from Rich Johanson a
fellow Master Gardener and grower in Orland. Rich supplies organic citrus to
Whole Foods, Wild Oats, Mountain People's and other biggies. Both gentlemen
have oranges available from January through March.
These are the last of the radishes for the main season. Carrots are
developing well and should be ready soon. Snow and snap peas are blooming
profusely, and should be more available in the next few weeks. Use either
beans or peas in the stew recipe.
The beet greens and thinnings are tasty but fragile; eat them soon. Our
Italian friends chop both leaves and baby beets coarsely, then stir-fry both
in olive oil and garlic until they wilt. Some add a splash of balsamic
vinegar for a sweet-and-sour side dish. The gorgeous broccoli comes from
Bryan's place.
Last Saturday, Lee finished bed preparation on the two other pieces of land
Bryan's CSA and ours will be getting veggies from this Winter.
REMINDER: SHARES ARE READY ONE DAY EARLIER AT THE USUAL LOCATIONS
THANKSGIVING WEEK.
