AGRICULTURE RESEARCH PREPROPOSALS SOUGHT
AMES--The Leopold Center for Sustainable Agriculture is looking for
research, education, and demonstration preproposals in several focus areas
in its $750,000 Competitive Grants Program. Deadline for the preproposals
is Sept. 4, 1997.
Five focus areas have been identified:
* agriculture and community,
* alternative research and education
* biologically intensive farming,
* soil quality/health, and
* water quality.
Preproposals relating to other areas of sustainable agriculture will also
be considered. More information is available by contacting the Leopold
Center, Iowa State University, 209 Curtiss Hall, Ames, IA 50011-1050, phone
(515) 294-3711, or by accessing the Center's World wide web page at
http://www.ag.iastate.edu/centers/leopold/Leopold.html.
The grants program encourages Iowans to develop research, education, and
demonstration projects and practices that support a more sustainable
agriculture. The program is open to researchers and educators at all Iowa
colleges and universities and at private nonprofit agencies and foundations
in Iowa. Other individuals and organizations may participate in the
program by collaborating with these groups. Funded projects would begin on
July 1, 1998.
Since 1988, the Center has awarded an estimated $7.3 million in support of
167 competitive grant projects. Through its research and education
programs, the Leopold Center supports the development of profitable farming
systems that conserve natural resources. Center funding comes from state
appropriations and from fees on nitrogen fertilizer and pesticides, as
established by the 1987 Iowa Groundwater Protection Act.
