Dear Saneters:

A 49-page document on assessment methods in agriculture is available as an
Adobe Acrobat file at the URL cited below. The document has chapters on
crop-specific, field-level, and whole farm assessment methods, as well as
environmental impact assessment for pesticides, implementation of
assessment tools in certification and labeling programs, and applications
in forestry. I thank my coauthor Luanne Lohr, Dept. of Agricultural &
Applied Economics, Univ. of Georgia, for her contributions to the text, for
making the document available on the web, and for editing and organizing
the material.

Given below are: the full citation, web access information, abstract,
request for corrections, updates, and new listings, and hard copy
availability info.

ABSTRACT:

Sustainability assessment is fundamental to improving the long-term
viability of agricultural systems. A variety of assessment tools have been
developed for the practitioner to evaluate sustainability at multiple
levels, from field to farm. This report is a compilation of annotated
references on assessment methods from published and unpublished sources.
Each section contains a methodological description, a list of published
sources, and a list of relevant programs and contacts. While not
exhaustive, the report presents a range of tools and applications that are
currently in use
or are in testing for future use.

REQUEST FOR CORRECTIONS, UPDATES, AND NEW LISTINGS

The document represents an ongoing project. It is frequently updated.
Readers are encouraged to submit comments, citations for unlisted or new
documents or projects, and corrections or updated information for currently
listed items. The most current, but unedited version, is available as an
Email attachment (Word, 189KB) from John Vickery. The table of contents
can be sent separately as a Word or text file. This version includes some
citations for nonagricultural applications such as golf courses and
institutional and corporate lands.

The marketing section (use of assessment methods as criteria to certify
envirodifferentiated products) is very short and will receive little
additional updating. It will be subsumed by another document that will be
available at a later date. For this new document, we are compiling
information on labeling programs and projects. If you have information on
a labeling initiative or would like more information on IATP's interests
and efforts on the use of environmental, social, and local/regional
criteria for the differentiation of agricultural products, please contact
Bill Vorley, Director, Environment & Agriculture, Institute for Agriculture
and Trade Policy at bvorley@iatp.org.
