Food Systems Teaching Job



JOB ANNOUNCEMENT

Visiting Professor of Agriculture, Food and Environment
School of Nutrition Science and Policy, Tufts University
Medford, Massachusetts

The Agriculture, Food and Environment (AFE) Program will hire a faculty
member from December 1997 through August 1998 to teach, work with graduate
students, and establish an Internship Collaborative.  This position
includes excellent benefits and compensation between $37,000 and $42,000,
depending on qualifications.  This is a nine-month position;  the starting
date is somewhat flexible but must be no later than January 1, 1998.

The School of Nutrition Science and Policy brings together biomedical,
social, political and behavioral scientists to conduct research,
educational and community service programs to improve the nutritional
health and well-being of people throughout the world.  The AFE Program
administers degree-granting programs at the M.S. and Ph.D. levels,
research, and community service projects dealing with domestic and
international problems and alternatives to current food-supply systems. 
Particular areas of interest include agriculture in and near cities, local
food systems, and consumer education. 

Qualifications:  

* earned doctorate in environmental or social policy, planning, nutrition,
social sciences or related field with an emphasis on food systems,
agriculture or environmental problems.  ABD doctoral candidates may be
considered. 

*  university teaching experience

*  (Preferred) experience with data-base construction and management; 
ability to use and evaluate computer-based information technology

Duties:  

* Prepare and teach one graduate-level course during the spring 1998
semester on food systems analysis and the interrelationships of food
supply mechanisms, environmental quality, and socioeconomic trends. The
applicant should be able to teach how to analyze commodity pathways,
assess needs and resources relevant to the food system in particular
communities, and develop policy recommendations. 

* Contribute to other occasional teaching activities of the SNSP, such as
seminar series, guest lecturing, and workshops. 

* Supervise up to 5 AFE directed-study projects during the spring
semester. 

* Coordinate internship advising for AFE students.  

* Develop the Sustainable Food Systems Internship Collaborative, in
cooperation with the AFE Program Director, to match students with suitable
organizations.  This will include building a data-base, working with
organizational participants to negotiate long-term arrangements, seeking
additional funds, and organizing at least one participants' meeting.  The
Internship Collaborative work is expected to require four-five months,
with most effort concentrated in June-August.
