One of the world's rarest trees, Wollemi Pine, is now available for sale
in Australia. This is part of an effort by the government of New South
Wales to ensure the survival of this amazing plant. Long known from the
fossil record, similar trees thrived during the Jurassic and Cretaceous.
In 1994, botanists discovered 39 living specimens of this tree near
Sydney. Now, they have succeeded in propagating the plant and are
encouraging botanical gardens and individuals to plant the tree in case
the original population gets wiped out.
It shows considerable promise both as an ornamental and as a timber tree
in the Southern Hemisphere. Its discovery and propagation has to be
marked as one of the greatest botanical discoveries of all time.
