"Sweating" the culm as described by Penny is easily done with an electric
heat gun, and helps in CURING.
For PRESERVING, smoking is the current state of the art, pioneered by
chimneyless kitchens in bamboo houses. And, yes, scrap bamboo can be used=
 for
the combustible smake source. It is being done industrially- as in Colombia=
-
basically build a smokehouse you can fill with bamboo.
