Bamboo construction class near Santa Cruz, CA

Advanced Bamboo Utilization
Taught by Karl Bareis & Simon Henderson
Karl has taught a class at the University of California at Santa Cruz for
each of the past six years and is offering the advanced class to members
of
the NCCABS and other graduates of the UCSC Extension classes. He is
trying
to avoid covering the basics again, so even if you feel like your
knowledge
level is low, please feel free to participate -- there's just a limit to
the
time available for answering questions.
Simon Henderson has recently moved to the bay area from the Pacific North
West where he taught Permaculture with a special focus on bamboo. He has
had
extensive teaching experience and will work with Karl to be able to bring
individual attention to the bamboo craft element within the class.
The class will be held in Bonny Doon, near Santa Cruz

The class will focus on using bamboo to build garden fences.
The class is organized to teach the principles of bamboo use in basic
design;
Harvest techniques; organization and use of traditional tools; Decorative
knot tying and structure, as well as foundation principles.
Additional information on creating tempering kilns for bamboo used in
architecture.
Participants should bring a sack lunch, as well as notebook and pen;
Class will be held outside and under a roofed work area, so dress warmly.
