I am an energy consultant in SC PA.  I have been involved in several
commercial projects using wet-spray cellulose.  I have calculated paybacks
of under five years as compared to fiberglass batts.  Installed cost is
about 50% more.  Savings are based on the fact that the entire wall cavity
is filled and therefore air movement is reduced.  I remember reading of
studies in Energy Design Update that reported 30% better thermal
performance, much of it attributed to reduced air flows.

One drawback is that the walls must dry out for 2-3 days before applying the
wall covering.  This can be a problem if the construction schedule is such
that the insulation will be installed in January.  It is also one more thing
to plan around.  One project did not use it for this reason.  In another
project the architect was concerned about moisture problems inside the wall.

Installation is real slick.  The material (cellulose, a binder, and water)
is blown into the wall cavity.  Excess insulation is scraped off the face of
the studs, swept up and fed back into the hopper.  Overall it is a great way
to insulate buildings.  Two thumbs up.
