GBlist: PA is looking for Sustainable Case Studies

Hello, GB Listers,

I've broken my lurking because I thought that Robert Kobet, and GB List
members, would be interested in the Green Building Challenge being
organised by Ray Cole of the UBC School of Architecture and Nils Larsson of
the Green Building Information Council.

The Green Building Challenge has asked some 24 design and building teams
from around the world to compile detailed case studies of
ecologically-responsive buildings, selected from ~100 submissions. These
case studies will be reviewed at a conference in Vancouver October 26-28,
1998. The buildings are primarily from the ICI (Industrial / Commercial /
Institutional) sector, but I believe some residential are likely to show up
as well.

All of the building teams are using a common core set of criteria to assess
their buildings' performance, that extend Ray's BEPAC (Building
Environmental Performance Assessment Criteria) work, and are an attempt to
develop a second-generation "... framework designed to assess the energy
and environmental performance of buildings". Each national team has also
developed their own, regionally / nationally specific subset of criteria
that respond to the particular conditions of their locale. The idea is to
learn from these criteria's application to real buildings and their
performance - and, of course, to draw lessons from the buildings themselves.

The GBC will be, in my experience, one of the largest and widest survey of
green building efforts internationally, with sponsorship by Natural
Resources Canada, the American Institute of Architects,
ASHRAE, the BEPAC Foundation, the U.K. Building Research Establishment,
CMHC, the Japanese Institute for Building Energy Conservation, the
International Energy Agency Annex 31, the U.S. Department of Energy & EPA,
among others.

I suspect that this may not be a great help to Robert Kobet, since the
detailed case studies have not yet been submitted, but further details on
the Green Building Challenge can be found at the GBIC website at
http://greenbuilding.ca/index-f1.html

I hope I'll get a chance to meet (and raise a cup of cheer with) some of
the GB List members at the GBC Conference.

Keep up the excellent work, folks! While I find I can't contribute as much
to the GB List conversations as much as I would like, I've certainly
learned a lot from my daily digest - and greatly appreciate the expertise
and generosity of the participants.

Warm regards,

Ian Theaker, P.Eng.
